Why do you need special shoes for squash?

Squash is played on a specific court unlike some other sports. These shoes are designed to be worn on this court much like indoor volleyball or soccer shoes.

Wearing regular running shoes will not help you play the best game possible because they propel you forward. In squash, you’re typically going side-to-side so you need support for that movement.

What’s the difference between squash and racquetball?

mens squash shoes

The biggest difference between the two is that the rackets used in racquetball are smaller. Their maximum length is 22 inches while squash rackets can be up to 27 inches. In addition, the squash ball is 4 centimeters while the racquetball is 2.25 inches.

When you play a game of squash, you must allow the opponent to hit directly on the front wall, but with racquetball, there’s limited freedom so your opponent could hit just part of the front wall. Squash games go until 9 points or 11 in a professional tournament while a racquetball match goes to 15 points.

What Makes The Best Squash Or Racquetball Shoes

There are a few things you need to keep in mind when you’re buying a new pair of racquetball or squash shoes. Here’s a list of things that are important:

Non-Marking Sole

As per the regulations for both racquetball and squash, light-colored soles are required so that they don't mark the court floor.

Sole Traction

Both squash and racquetball are high-speed sports. You’re constantly stopping and turning abruptly and your shoes need to be able to handle that without sliding.

Linked to this, make sure that you have a dedicated pair of shoes for squash or racquetball that you only use indoors. Dirt from shoes that have been used outdoors can make the court slippery, which is dangerous for the players and can cause injuries.

Fit

I know what you're thinking; it's always important that your shoes fit. What’s different in the case of squash and racquetball shoes is that your feet will swell during the game. You need to get shoes that will be as comfortable at the end of the game as when you start the first set.

Breathable

The best squash shoes, as well as the best racquetball shoes, allow air to flow through them so that your feet won't get too hot throughout the game. Mesh sections on the shoe are particularly good for this.

Quality

It’s said that squash or racquetball players will have to replace their shoes as often in a season as the number of times they play per week. Getting a good quality pair of shoes can save you a lot in the long run since they won’t need to be replaced as often as a lower quality pair.

5 Top Squash Shoes for Men

1. Asics Men’s GEL Rocket 7

Our Rating

Will These Shoes Fit Me?

85%
 Chance of Success

The Asics Men’s GEL Rocket 7 is the shoe that my research showed to be the best squash and racquetball shoe for men. It’s officially listed as a volleyball shoe but it works fabulously for both squash and racquetball as well.

Many people choose to use this shoe because, amongst other things, it has a great sole. The sole has a higher natural rubber content than most other shoes, which increases the shock absorbency and traction.

It has gel cushioning for even more comfort and a mesh upper, which allows air to flow. Despite the padding, Asics has still managed to make the GEL Rocket 7 very lightweight which is ideal for playing squash and racquetball.

This is a good quality shoe that will last you for some time and is very reasonably priced.

Though the overwhelming majority only has good things to say about this shoe, there are some users who’ve found that the shoe is hard when it comes out of the box and isn’t ready to be used for a full game.

Obviously, this isn’t a permanent problem so if you face it, just walk around with the shoes on at home for a few hours and you should be good to go. This only means that the shoe adapts to your foot. Once it’s broken in, though, most agree that it’s a very comfortable shoe.

On the other hand, there are plenty of positives for the Men’s GEL Rocket 7. The thing that gets mentioned the most by users is that it has amazing grip. This is important for any sport played on an indoor court, but especially so for high-speed games like squash and racquetball.

The grip helps prevent injuries that could result from slipping while playing. The low weight of the shoe is another bonus.

Pros

  • High rubber content of sole
  • Gel cushioning
  • Durable
  • Superior grip
  • Use on any indoor court

Cons

  • Not flexible out of the box
  • There aren’t many styles

2. ASICS Men's Gel-Rocket 8 Volleyball Shoe

This is the newer version of the Asics squash shoes listed as our number one pick. This synthetic mesh design also has a rear foot gel cushion for maximum comfort. This is helpful when you’re on your feet for long games. There are also pivot points on the sole to give you minimal resistance plus friction while you’re on the court.

These shoes aren’t just breathable but also are lightweight as well. Because of the low price, they are a great entry-level shoe, especially if we take into account the fact that they are amazingly durable - and this is not only something the brand promises, but the users confirm:

Great court shoe (...) Fits nicely; runs maybe a little big but not much. These shoes also last for a long time. This is my second pair in 3 years and I play almost every other day".

They’re available in four different styles. Some people did comment that there’s little arch support with this option, but if you don’t need that, you might as well save the money.

Pros

  • Mesh synthetic construction
  • Rearfoot gel cushion
  • Pivot points on the sole
  • Low cost
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Not as durable as others
  • Little to no arch support

Don’t let the soccer in the name get you confused! This is one of the best squash shoes because it’s made of leather with a dual-density sole. This outsole provides great surface resistance plus flexibility. You’ll find great protection from erosion and wear while providing you with long-lasting endurance. This durability is thanks to the commitment that Kelme puts in all of their shoes, as they state in their official website:

We monitor the manufacturing of all our products and invest in technology improvements (...) This is why year after year we continue with our challenge to improve and move forward in this industry, working in partnership with the best institutions and laboratories, such as the Valencia Biomechanics Institute (...) and the INESCOP laboratory, with the purpose of manufacturing the best possible product for our end users".

The shoe fits like a glove and comes in a variety of color options. You could get a few different pairs and match your personality on any given day. It’s important to note that an overwhelming majority felt this shoe ran on the larger side, so it would be wise to order a size smaller just to be sure.

Pros

  • Leather construction
  • Dual-density sole
  • Superior surface resistance
  • Durable
  • Many styles

Cons

  • Fits larger than expected
  • Some styles are expensive

Will These Shoes Fit Me?

This shoe is constructed of a mesh-synthetic that features a shock absorption insole. The reason they’re great men's racquetball shoes is that they have a fantastic energy return which helps you to bounce back following any impact.

You’ll also find superior stability thanks to the midsole which transfers your energy coming from the heel up to the forefoot. They also feature a non-marking gum sole which is amazing for the indoor courts - and according to the squash experts, it's even a requirement most of the times:

Squash etiquette (which is backed up by rules in most facilities) requires players to wear clean shoes with non-marking soles. This means that the shoes you play in should not be the shoes you wear while traveling to or from the squash court".

You might find that this sneaker provides a little more protection than others thanks to the synthetic leather in the upper portion, which also is designed to help your feet stay cool. There are three styles to chose from and some people felt the shoe ran a little large in size, so be aware of that when ordering.

Pros

  • Mesh synthetic construction
  • Shock absorption insole
  • Superior energy return
  • Durable
  • Protective

Cons

  • Fits larger than expected
  • Only three styles available

Will These Shoes Fit Me?

Just because the name says soccer shoe, it’s important that you know these are the best adidas squash shoes out there. Even if they were created with indoor soccer in mind, the PSA (Professional Squash Association) World Tour official blog suggests that these shoes are also very suitable for this sport:

There is a big market for devoted squash shoes now, with companies (...) offering specifically designed footwear, and companies like Adidas (...) producing more general ‘court’ shoes that are often also marketed toward sports such as volleyball and handball, but which share most of the same characteristics crucial to squash – appropriate ankle support, midfoot and heel cushioning, prevention of lateral roll etc.".

That’s because they have a synthetic and textile upper that gives maximum comfort while remaining lightweight.

You’ll be propelling yourself back and forth on the court with speed and agility. In addition, the outsole provides you with superior traction that’s specifically designed to grip court surfaces.

There are numerous vibrant colors to choose from, but sizing is limited. It’s also important to note that several people felt they ran a little on the small side.

Pros

  • Breathable
  • Comfortable
  • Superior traction
  • Many vibrant colors to choose from
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Sizing is limited
  • Might run slightly small

5 Top Squash Shoes for Women

1. ASICS Women’s Gel Upcourt Volleyball Shoe

Our Rating

Will These Shoes Fit Me?

83%
 Chance of Success

As much as I wish I had another brand to tell you about, I’ve decided that the best women's shoe for racquetball and squash is also an Asics shoe. It’s called the Asics Women’s Gel Upcourt Volleyball Shoe.

Like the men’s shoe, this one is also classified by Asics as a volleyball shoe but is widely used for both squash and racquetball.

It’s a lace-up shoe with lots of padding. The padding makes it both comfortable and adaptable to your foot. In terms of fit, the shoe has a wider toe box and a narrow heel. The shoe complies with the regulations of squash and racquetball with its non-marking, rubber outer sole.

The rubber on this shoe is slightly softer than the norm and has amazing grip on indoor courts. Asics is a well-known brand that stands for quality, but they still manage to offer customers a good price. This shoe is no different in that. You get the Asics quality that can last you a long time at a reasonable price.

Since this is my top pick for women, it’s a great shoe. Since it’s a great shoe, there’s hardly any negative feedback about them. The only thing that came up during my research was complaints about the size of the shoe.

Half of the complaints were that the shoe was too small and the other half were that it was too big, so my conclusion is just that you need to make sure to check the sizing guide before purchasing.

On the bright side, there are a lot of positives when it comes to this shoe, like this review which pretty much sums up everything that is amazing about it:

Just holding them in my hand, I can tell they're lighter weight than the other shoes I've had, which is a good thing. They fit snugly and securely without being tight, and the soles are nice and sticky (which they're supposed to be, of course, but when you've been dealing with old, slippery gum rubber for a couple of years, it's noticeable). The soles also feel like they have a slight curve, making me WANT to have my weight forward and be ready to move".

Long story short; the grip of the shoe not only lets you play to your full potential but lowers your risk of injury at the same time. The mesh allows air to flow through the shoe which adds to your comfort. The high quality of the shoe means that you won't be replacing it as often.

Pros

  • Padded for comfort
  • Rubber outer sole
  • Superior grip
  • Breathable
  • Vibrant colors

Cons

  • Sizing might not be accurate
  • Lack of styles

When you need the best women's squash shoes, make sure you check out this pair from Asics. The gum rubber sole gives you the ideal traction while still allowing you to move with ease. In addition, there’s a rearfoot gel inside the shoe to allow you hours of comfort, even after the longest games.

No matter the age, these provide comfort and safety for every user who decides to wear them:

I ordered these shoes and I love them! They give me good traction, are beautifully balanced, light weight, and I feel so much safer. I am an older gal and have been sedentary for years. Now I can go have fun!"

Yes, customers are loving them and with all reasons. This shoe is versatile and can be used for numerous indoor court sports, so feel free to use them as women’s racquetball shoes as well.

There are only three styles of this shoe available, but they’re still going to stand out on the court. While some people mentioned that this shoe could run small, it’s important to note that the price is budget-friendly.

Pros

  • Breathable
  • Gum rubber sole for traction
  • Rearfoot gel
  • Versatile
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Lack of styles
  • Might run slightly small

Asics seems to be the clear winner today with the best racquetball shoes and this pair is no exception. With the forefoot GEL cushioning system, you have maximum shock absorption during impact. In addition, this shoe features the Truss tic System Technology which reduces the weight of the sole unit without losing any structural integrity of the shoe.

There are three different styles available with this shoe, and as with many of the Asics reviewed earlier, the price is right. However, some users state they lack room inside the shoe and feel too narrow:

I LOVE these shoes (...) great grip, and are comfortable! On the other side, I am usually always a 7.5 in athletic shoes but had to return them and get an 8 because the 7.5 were too exact. With shoes that you are going to be moving around in a lot and jumping in, you need to have some space for your feet to move freely so your toes don’t slam against the tip of the shoe".

Despite this mishap, I’d recommend this pair to anyone looking to get some game time in while still maintaining a budget.

Pros

  • Forefoot GEL cushioning system
  • Lightweight
  • Solid and firm support
  • Budget-friendly
  • Lots of sizes to choose from

Cons

  • Too narrow
  • Durability might not be as good as some other Asics

Take your game to the next level with this pair of racquetball shoes. The lightweight construction is what is needed if you want to be a pro on the court. You can increase your speed without sacrificing any stability or durability. This design is made from a seamless upper. In addition, there’s an EVA midsole that remains low to the ground.

The sidewall of this shoe wraps up the foot to provide even more stability. Plus, the new Head Hybrasion combined with the rubber compound is why you’ll know this shoe was made to last. According to the NHS (UK's biggest health website), you should look for these characteristics when choosing squash shoes:

When playing racquet sports (...) it's important to choose shoes specifically designed for the purpose. These sports involve a lot of side-to-side movement, and running shoes won't offer the right stability. Racquet-sport shoes are heavier and stiffer than running shoes, as their toes are built for stop-and-go action. Comfort should be your number 1 priority, and it's important to replace your sports shoes frequently".

Suitability? Check. However, you'll only be able to choose between two colors and sizing seems to run slightly small, so keep that in mind when you order.

Pros

  • EVA midsole
  • Lightweight
  • Stable
  • Durable
  • Lots of sizes to choose from

Cons

  • Lack of styles
  • Sizing might run small

Last but not least, these are many users' very favorites. They have all the amazing features needed for a sport like squash, with a more stylish look than probably the rest of the shoes on this list. Some customers tried everything and ended up putting these as their #1's:

I think I've tried every shoe out there with varying success but these are my hands-down favorite. This is my second pair and I love how light they are (...) Good support, huge toe box (...) The silver on white is kind of a breathe of fresh air from all of the neon colors they've been putting out for so long. Old school chic.".

Weather you like plain or vibrant colors, don’t sacrifice style when you head out on the court. This shoe from K-Swiss is guaranteed to turn some heads. They aren’t just light and breathable but this shoe keeps your foot close to the court so you can move with ease in any direction.

There are more than 10 fun styles to choose from, so be sure to snag a few. Just keep in mind that the price is a little more than the Asics sneakers, but you have the durability behind the K-Swiss name to back that up. It’s also important to note that while there are no wide sizes available in this shoe, some people felt they worked well for a larger foot.

Pros

  • Reputable brand
  • Lightweight
  • Breathable
  • Lots of styles
  • Fits wider feet

Cons

  • Price is higher
